The Sounds of the Banjo Barons Ragtime Band

For HELP with listening to the music,

Sleigh Ride
Here is our arrangement of Leroy Anderson’s tune written for the Boston Pops. It’s a knuckle buster to play, but Mike Woitowicz manages to get in some fancy tenor banjo cross-pickin’ patterns on the melody. Jim Kerhin did the overdubbed sleigh bells in one take. Overall, it’s a great tune to play and listen to.

It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing
This is our arrangement of Duke Ellington's famous swing tune. Don Sheskey’s washboard magic includes artfully placed whistles and cymbals. Jim Kerhin plays a hot plectrum banjo solo on the chorus after the vocal. Then, Mike & Jim “trade fours” on the last chorus while Dave Martinsek plays an outstanding driving bass. Watch out for the tricky ending!

Blue Skirt Waltz
This tune was a million selling recording in the 1950's for Frankie Yankovic, who was known as "America's Polka King." It's been recorded hundreds of times by polka bands, but as far as we know, it's the only all banjo recording of this tune. Mike plays lead on tenor banjo and Terry Kinakin plays a tasteful rhythm line on his plectrum. As usual, Dave Martinsek provides a very solid “low end” in this tune (Note: Dave played string bass for a few gigs with Yankovic when he toured the Midwest USA).

Anything Goes
This selection is the title tune from the Broadway musical of the same name. Mike and Jim trade solos on tenor and plectrum banjo on this up-tempo arrangement. What makes this arrangement swing is some great banjo syncopation, a key change, a solid bass line, and a snappy ending. Washboardist Don Sheskey adds some great rhythm “color” to make this tune really swing!
